WEATHER

Hot and humid summers are typical, except at the highest elevations. The degree to which the weather of a certain area of Georgia is subtropical depends not just on the latitude and the altitude, but also on how close it is to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.

The areas near the Florida/Georgia border, extending from the entire Georgia coastline west to the Florida panhandle, experiences the most subtropical weather, with frequent thunderstorms and mild, dry winters. These areas experience snow much less frequently than other parts of Georgia.

The mountains of Georgia have the coolest climate and most frequent snowfall.

Georgia is one of the leading states in incidents of tornadoes, and is also vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms.

Georgia has had severe droughts. Temperatures over 100 ° F have been recorded. The highest temperature ever recorded is 112 ° F (44.4 ° C), The lowest ever recorded is -17 ° F (-27.2 ° C).

Trade and service sectors supply the majority of jobs in Georgia. Manufacturing and agriculture remain important to the state's economy. Livestock and poultry raising account for the largest share of farm income; broilers, eggs, and cattle are major products.

Tobacco is the principal crop in the central and southern sections of the state, peanuts in the southwest. Cotton and corn are other imporant crops. Georgia is the nation's largest producer of peanuts.

The manufacture of textiles and textile products has long been Georgia's leading industry. major manufactures include transportation equipment, foods, paper products, chemicals, and automobiles.

Because Georgia is heavily forested with pine, the state is a leading producer of lumber and pulpwood.

Valuable minerals produced are clays, stone, kaolin, iron ore, sand, and gravel. Georgia is famous for its fine marble.

Hundreds of feature films have been located in Georgia. More than $4 billion had been generated for the state's economy by the film and television industry since the 1970s.


SCHOOLS

Georgia Department of Education Georgia is home to almost 70 public colleges, universities, and technical colleges in addition to over 45 private institutes of higher learning.

The HOPE scholarship, funded by the state lottery, is available to all Georgia residents who have graduated from high school with a 3.0 or higher grade point average and who attend a public college or university in the state. This scholarship has had a significant impact on the state university system, increasing competition for admission and increasing the quality of education. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and provides a stipend for books for up to 120 credit hours.

The Georgia Department of Education, comprised of five Offices under the State Superintendent of Schools, oversees public education throughout the state. They ensure that laws and regulations pertaining to education are followed and that state and federal money appropriated for education is properly allocated to local school systems. They also provide education~related information to students, parents, teachers, educational staff, government officials, and the media.

The Georgia Board of Education with the State Superintendent of Schools provide the statewide leadership necessary to ensure the opportunity for each public school student to be successful. , played in Augusta, Georgia at Augusta National Golf Club is one of 4 major golf tournaments played in the United States.

The 1st Tournament was held Mar 22, 1934, and beginning in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each year during the first full week in April.
