Oklahoma was the 46th state to
enter the union.
More than 25 Native American languages are spoken
in Oklahoma,
the most of any state.
The state name is derived from the Choctaw words 'okla' and 'humma',
meaning "land of the red man".
Oklahoma has about 3.5 million
residents in a land area of 68667 mi² (177847 km²).
It borders on the east with Arkansas
and Missouri,
on the north by Kansas,
on the northwest by Colorado,
on the far west by New Mexico,
and on the south and west by Texas.

Among the most geographically diverse states,
Oklahoma has 11 distinct ecological zones
within its borders,
more per square mile than any other state.

WEATHER
With cold winters and hot summers,
Oklahoma is considered a continental climate .
Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state.
Oklahoma is located in a
temperate region and experiences
occasional extremes of temperature and precipitation.
The record high is 120 ° F (49 ° C).
The whole state frequently gets temperatures above 100 ° F (38 ° C),
and below 0 ° F (-18 ° C).
The lowest temperature recorded is –27 ° F (–33 ° C).
Snowfall ranges from less than 4 in (10 cm) in the south
to just over 20 in (51 cm) in the northwest corner.
Precipitation and temperatures fall from east to west.
In the southeast, average annual rainfall is 56 in (1420 mm).
In the northwest panhandle, its just under 17 in (430 mm).
Most of the state lies in an area known as 'Tornado Alley'.
Oklahoma has one of the highest
rates in the world.
On average, 54 tornadoes strike the state per year.

Oklahoma is an important producer of
natural gas, aircraft, and food.
The state ranks 2nd in the United States for natural gas production.
Oil has contributed greatly to the state's economy.
The government sector provides the most jobs,
followed by transportation and utilities, education,
business, and manufacturing, respectively.
The state is the #1 manufacturer of tires in
North America.
Aerospace accounts for more than 10% of Oklahoma's industrial output.
Tulsa is home to the largest airline
maintenance base in the world.
Other major manufacturing industries include
meat processing, oil & gas equipment, and air conditioner equipment.
Due to its position in the center of the United States,
Oklahoma is one of the
top states for logistic centers,
and a major contributor to weather~related research.
The state also has one of the fastest~growing biotechnology
industries in the nation.
Oklahoma is active in cattle and beef production,
as well as wheat,
poultry, swine, and dairy products.

Long before it became the 46th state,

Oklahoma participates in
Achieve's American Diploma Project network dedicated to aligning
PK~12 curricula, standards, assessments and
accountability policies with the demands of college and work.
The Oklahoma State System of Higher Education was created
in 1941 by popular vote.
It prescribes academic standards of higher education,
determines functions and courses of study at state colleges
and universities, grants degrees, recommends budget allocations
and fees for each college and university.
The System manages 23 special scholarships and programs,
and also operates the
Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program,
which guarantees loans made to students by the private sector.
With a current enrollment of more than 236 thousand students,
the The Oklahoma State System of Higher Education is comprised of 25 colleges and universities
and 10 constituent agencies and one higher education center.
The System is coordinated by the Oklahoma State Regents
for Higher Education, and each institution is governed by a
board of regents.
